Lady Gaga’s foundation to fund classroom projects in Dayton, El Paso, and Gilroy

TwitterFacebook

The beginning of the school year can be rough for anyone. For the communities of El Paso, Dayton, Ohio, and Gilroy, California that have been rocked by recent mass shootings, it’s especially difficult this year.

Lady Gaga is trying to make this transition easier.

Her foundation, Born This Way Foundation, has partnered with the charity DonorsChoose.org to fund classroom projects in these three areas.

Stephen King has written a new ending for ‘The Stand’ and this is not a drill

TwitterFacebook

Although it was first published over 40 years ago, The Stand remains one of Stephen King’s most iconic novels.

It’s also one of the longest single-part novels he’s ever written. The version I have sitting on my bookshelf is over 1,300 beautiful pages long, which puts it up there with IT in terms of the sheer volume of material in the thing.

But apparently, King has even more ideas for the story that he’s only just writing now.

On Thursday, Deadline reported that the horror master is writing…

The softblocking meme blends literary references with cancel culture

TwitterFacebook

Oof. Yikes. A new copypasta has everyone softblocking problematic villains from well known stories, all in the name of the meme.

Urban Dictionary defines softblocking as “A phrase often used by Twitter users to describe the blocking of another person, then immediate unblock.”

Essentially, it forces the blocked party to unknowingly unfollow the user so they stop interacting with the user’s tweets.

It’s a passive-aggressive — but drama-skirting — way to get someone out of your social…

Alan Moore, writer worst served by Hollywood, calls it quits

TwitterFacebook

If there’s one thing that Alan Moore understands, it’s dramatic timing.

The writer of some of the greatest graphic novels ever — Watchmen, From Hell, V for Vendetta and Batman: Killing Joke, to name the most overexposed — announced that he’d be hanging up his keyboard and retiring with the last-ever issue of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. (Also retiring: its legendary artist, Kevin O’Neill.) A corpus of comics that transformed the entire genre, arguably turning it into true…

Let Amazon sell you some books about wealth inequality and climate change

TwitterFacebook

Prime Day, the day Amazon is set to make $2 billion as we shoppers seize deals on electronics filled with mined minerals or accessories formed through melted down plastic, is upon us.

To glom on, succubus like, to the frenzy of Prime Day — but with a subversive twist! — I thought it would be cute to suggest you read some books about the way money, power, shortsightedness, and greed fueled the success of companies like Amazon and their billionaire bosses, at the expense of our wallets,…
