TikTok owner reportedly planning its own smartphone

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, could soon be launching yet another ambitious project: their own smartphone. 

The Financial Times reported the new project, citing “two people familiar with the project,” on Monday. The plan is to focus on launching the phone with the company’s many apps pre-installed to lure buyers into choosing their phone over competitors.

As TikTok continues to dominate app download charts, its parent company, ByteDance, is looking to extend its reach even further.

ByteDance launched a new messaging-focused app on Monday, as reported by TechCrunch. Feiliao (飞聊), or Flipchat in English, is a messenger app that encourages users to form and join chat groups based around common interests.

Instagram is killing Direct, its standalone Snapchat clone app, in the next several weeks

As Facebook pushes ahead with its strategy to consolidate more of the backend of its various apps on to a single platform, it’s also doing a little simplifying and housekeeping. In the coming month, it will shut down Direct, the standalone Instagram direct messaging app that it was testing to rival Snapchat, on iOS and Android. Instead, Facebook and its Instagram team will channel all developments and activity into the direct messaging feature of the main Instagram app.
