SpaceX just blasted a critical NASA instrument into space

NASA’s carbon-detecting sleuth has left Earth.

SpaceX launched the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-3 (OCO-3) to the International Space Station (ISS) at 2:48 a.m. ET on Saturday morning aboard the company’s dependable Falcon 9 rocket. After NASA’s cargo load arrives at the ISS, astronauts will use a long robotic arm to attach the refrigerator-sized instrument to the side of the earth-orbiting station.

OCO-3 will peer down on Earth, keeping tabs on the planet’s amassing carbon dioxide…

If Friends was set in the present day, and Chandler, Joey, Rachel, and Monica were playing the who-knows-who-best trivia game, the girls would have easily named Chandler’s job, which is, at its very core, a Data Scientist.

Given that companies today are collecting more data than they can handle, data scientists like Chandler are highly sought after. Truth is, it’s not as complicated as it seems.

At its most minimal, you really only need Microsoft Excel and an online bootcamp like this…

Trump’s climate expert is wrong: The world’s plants don’t need more CO2

TwitterFacebook

Plants on Earth have flourished for hundreds of millions of years, yet President Donald Trump’s pick to lead his new climate team insists that they need more carbon dioxide to thrive.

Princeton physicist and carbon dioxide-advocate William Happer has been selected to head the brand new Presidential Committee on Climate Security, reports The Washington Post. The atomic scientist — who achieved recognition for his work on atomic collisions and telescope optics, not climate science —…

Earth’s coldest years on record all happened over 90 years ago

TwitterFacebook

Here’s a statistic: On Earth, 18 of the last 19 years have been the warmest in recorded history.

And as both NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced on Wednesday, the last five years have been the five hottest in history — since quality record-keeping began in the 1880s. It’s an unmistakable, accelerating warming trend.

The globe’s 21st-century heating, however, becomes all the more stark when compared to the coldest years on record. As climate…

Andromeda galaxy will deliver a ‘glancing blow’ to our Milky Way later than expected

TwitterFacebook

Astronomers have long suspected that the colossal Andromeda galaxy would, in billions years, collide with our humble Milky Way.

The collision was forecast to happen in some 3.9 billion years. But after astronomers analyzed new data captured by the European Space Agency’s star-surveying satellite Gaia, they now put the imminent date at 4.5 billion years — so 600 million years later than initially expected.

The event, detailed in The Astrophysical Journal, is characterized as a “swipe”…
