‘Dark Phoenix’ mercifully brings the X-Men saga to a close

TwitterFacebook

Dark Phoenix ends, as all superhero movies do, with the hint of more to come. But it’s a mirage this time, as far as we know: This truly is the end of Fox’s core X-Men series for the foreseeable future, at least until it gets rebooted under the Disney umbrella.

And it comes not a moment too soonDark Phoenix feels less like a triumphant sendoff than a reminder of the series’ most self-sabotaging tendencies.

This one does, at least, suffer from less narrative sloppiness than its predecessors,…

DC’s ‘Doom Patrol’ helped me take ownership of my trauma

TwitterFacebook

Superhero stories have taught us that surviving the worst circumstances can be powerfully transformative, like Tony Stark building the first Iron Man suit or Bruce Wayne becoming Batman. But the reality is not so glorious. There’s nothing noble about living with trauma. Usually, it’s messy and painful and littered with regressions and false steps.

Doom Patrol is a show all about the parts that aren’t so easily squared away. The titular superhero team may have remarkable abilities, but their…

‘Fantastic Four’ director expertly roasts himself on Twitter

TwitterFacebook

Sometimes the universe just hands you a set-up for a joke so perfect that you have no choice but to go for it.

The universe – or in this case, Twitter – just presented director Josh Trank with the perfect opportunity to subtly burn himself and one of his, er, less successful career endeavours.

Joseph Kahn, a fellow director, tweeted out a pretty blatant statement about superhero movies, claiming that…

James Gunn’s sci-fi horror film ‘Brightburn’ drops scary new trailer

TwitterFacebook

Things aren’t looking great for Elizabeth Banks in the new trailer for James Gunn’s Brightburn.

The director’s first post-Guardians of the Galaxy film throws back to his older work on sci-fi horror films like Slither, which also starred Banks. And she’s got quite the troubled son to deal with.

Directed by David Yarovesky, written by Mark and Brian Gunn, and produced by James Gunn (yeah, keepin’ up with the Gunns here) Brightburn blends the superhero and horror genres with the tale of an…
